Concrete, that construction world staple that fills driveways and discolors the cityscape with its industrial grayness, is showing up in an unusual place these days—inside our homes.
But it’s not the cold, bland concrete your may envision. In the hands of artisans—and with the use of dyes, acid, minerals, molds, forms, textures, finishes, polishes and sealers—concrete has moved seamlessly into kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, showers, fireplaces, even interior floors. It’s also a surprising green choice because old concrete can be recycled into new.

SANTA CRUZ - Tom Ralston Concrete won top honors in January at the 2012 World of Concrete in Las Vegas, his first best overall award.
The winning project involved revamping a hillside in Saratoga, installing undulating concrete retaining walls, a series of scalloped concrete stairs, patios, a pool deck and fire pit.
Ralston claimed first place for "Cast in Place Specialty Finishes," then competed against 50 other entries in 11 categories to be chosen "Best Overall Decorative Concrete Project" in 2011.

Tom Ralston Concrete won another first place award at the 2011 World of Concrete in Las Vegas for our Rockview Home floors, walls, and stairs. This is our fourth first-place award in a national, industry-wide competition. Our multi-colored acid stained floors have beach glass, seashells, and craggy fissured walls that emulates the seashore outside of the home that overhangs and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

Decorative Concrete Hall of Fame: The 2011 Inductees

The Decorative Concrete Hall of Fame announced its first group of honorees at the 2010 Concrete Decor Show & Spring Training, in Phoenix, Ariz. It was only fitting that the Hall of Fame welcome its 2011 inductees at the 2011 Concrete Decor Show, held last March in Nashville, Tenn.
The new members were chosen by Hall of Fame members and owners and staff of Concrete Decor parent company Professional Trade Publications Inc., which manages the Hall of Fame.
